Will I Go Blind During Laser Eye Surgery?
It’s one of the most common fears patients have — and one of the most understandable.
The short answer is simple: no, you will not go blind during laser eye surgery.
But you may notice some temporary changes in what you see while the laser is working. Here’s what actually happens, step by step.
What Will I See During Laser Eye Surgery?
During LASIK, PRK, or SMILE, your eyes are numbed with drops, and you remain awake throughout the procedure. While this can sound intimidating, most patients are surprised by how quick and controlled the experience is.
While the laser is active, you may notice:
- A cloudy or hazy view
- Temporary dimming of vision
- Blurred shapes or light
- A bright fixation light to look at
This is completely normal and expected.
The laser itself doesn’t “turn off” your vision — it simply changes how light passes through your cornea while reshaping it.
Why Does Vision Go Cloudy or Hazy?
As the laser reshapes the cornea, light temporarily scatters differently before reaching the retina. This causes the brief hazy or misty sensation some patients describe.
Think of it like looking through frosted glass for a few seconds — not darkness, and not blindness.
What Happens After the Laser Stops?
As soon as the laser finishes and the procedure is complete:
- Vision begins to return immediately
- The haziness clears within moments
- You’ll usually be able to see shapes and movement right away
With LASIK and SMILE, many patients notice significantly clearer vision within hours.
With PRK, clarity improves more gradually over the following days to weeks — which is part of normal healing.
Will I Ever “Lose” Vision During Surgery?
No. Your eye is never disconnected from the brain, and the laser is computer-guided with multiple safety systems in place.
Modern laser platforms:
- Track eye movement in real time
- Pause automatically if you move
- Deliver precise, controlled treatment
This technology ensures the procedure is both safe and accurate.
Bottom Line
You will not go blind during laser eye surgery.
Temporary haziness or cloudiness while the laser is working is normal — and vision returns as soon as the procedure is complete. With modern technology, experienced surgeons, and proper screening, laser eye surgery is a safe and well-established procedure performed worldwide every day.
