Why Can’t You Exercise After LASIK?
LASIK eye surgery is a life-changing procedure that can free you from the hassle of glasses and contact lenses. While the recovery process is relatively quick, it’s important to follow post-operative guidelines to ensure the best possible outcome.
One common restriction patients encounter is avoiding exercise for a certain period after LASIK. But why is this necessary? Let’s break it down.
The Healing Process After LASIK
LASIK involves reshaping the cornea with a laser to improve vision. The procedure creates a flap in the corneal tissue, which needs time to heal and reattach properly. The first 24 to 48 hours are the most critical, as your eyes are at their most vulnerable to irritation, infection, and displacement of the corneal flap.
The cornea has no blood supply of its own, which means it heals differently from other body tissues. The primary way it recovers is through the natural regrowth of epithelial cells, which can take several weeks to fully stabilise. During this period, any activity that increases pressure on the eyes or introduces foreign substances can cause complications.
The Risks of Exercising Too Soon
Engaging in physical activity too soon after LASIK can pose several risks, including:
- Sweat and Irritants – Sweating can introduce bacteria and irritants into the eyes, increasing the risk of infection or inflammation. This is particularly concerning since post-LASIK eyes are more sensitive and susceptible to irritation.
- Accidental Eye Rubbing – During workouts, you may unknowingly rub your eyes, which can displace the healing corneal flap and lead to complications. Even minor rubbing can introduce harmful bacteria and interfere with proper healing.
- Dry Eyes – Exercise can lead to dehydration, which exacerbates post-LASIK dryness and discomfort. Many LASIK patients experience dry eye symptoms as part of their healing process, and physical exertion can worsen this condition.
- Risk of Trauma – Contact sports and activities with sudden movements (such as basketball, martial arts, or even yoga poses that involve head tilts) increase the likelihood of an accidental eye injury. Even a small impact can cause damage while your eyes are still healing.
When Can You Resume Exercise?
The timeline for resuming exercise varies, but general recommendations include:
- Light walking: After 24–48 hours. Gentle movement is safe and can even aid circulation, which is beneficial for healing.
- Low-impact activities (yoga, light jogging): After 1 week. Avoid any poses or movements that require inversion or straining.
- Strenuous workouts (weightlifting, intense cardio): After 2 weeks. Be cautious about wiping sweat away and avoid direct air exposure from fans or wind.
- Contact sports or swimming: After 4 weeks. These activities carry a higher risk of injury and infection, so extra caution is needed.
Follow Your Surgeon’s Advice
While these are general guidelines, each patient’s recovery differs. Always follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions and attend follow-up appointments to ensure your eyes are healing properly.
