What Is Considered a Stable Prescription for Laser Eye Surgery?

If you're considering laser eye surgery, one of the first things you'll hear is: "Your prescription needs to be stable."

But what does that actually mean?

In simple terms, a stable prescription means your vision has not significantly changed over time and is unlikely to continue changing after surgery.

Let's break that down.

What does "Stable" really mean?

For laser eye surgery, a prescription is generally considered stable if:

  • It has changed by less than 0.50 diopters over the past 12 months
  • You haven't needed stronger glasses or contact lenses recently
  • Your vision has remained consistent year to year

Why does this matter? Because laser eye surgery permanently reshapes your cornea based on your current prescription. If your eyes are still changing, the correction may not last as intended.

Why prescriptions change

It's completely normal for vision to fluctuate at certain stages of life.

Common reasons include:

  • Being under 21–25 years old
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy or breastfeeding)
  • High levels of myopia
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Long periods of screen use (temporary fluctuations)

That's why age and medical history are reviewed carefully during your screening.

How dwcheck stability?

At your laser eye screening, we:

  • Measure your current prescription
  • Compare it to previous prescriptions (if available)
  • Assess corneal shape and thickness
  • Review your contact lens history

If needed, we may ask you to wait and recheck your prescription in a few months.

What happens If mprescription isn'tstable?

If your vision is still changing, surgery may simply be postponed, not ruled out.

Waiting allows:

  • Your eyes to settle
  • More predictable long-term results
  • Reduced chance of needing an enhancement later

The goal is not just clear vision today but clear, lasting vision for years to come.

Does age guarantee stability?

Not always, but generally:

  • Most patients over 25 have stable prescriptions
  • Younger patients are more likely to experience change
  • After 40, presbyopia (near vision changes) becomes a separate factor

This is why each patient is assessed individually.

Bottom Line

A stable prescription means your vision has not changed significantly over at least one year. This ensures laser eye surgery is accurate, predictable, and long-lasting.

If your prescription isn't stable yet, it doesn't mean you won't qualify; it just means the timing needs to be right.
