What happens during LASIK?

If you're thinking about LASIK, you might be wondering, "What actually happens during the procedure?" It's normal to feel curious (and a little nervous). Let’s break it down step-by-step, so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Getting you comfortable

When you arrive for LASIK, we’ll get you settled in. You'll be awake, but very relaxed. We use special numbing drops to ensure you don't feel any discomfort in your eyes. There’s no need to worry about pain. The drops take effect quickly and work very well.

Step 2: Preparing your eye

We gently clean around your eye, then place an eyelid supporter, known as a speculum, to help keep your eyelids open. You won’t feel it, thanks to the numbing drops. This step is important to prevent blinking during the procedure.

Step 3: Creating the flap

The first step of LASIK involves creating a thin flap in the cornea, the clear front layer of your eye. This is done using a specialised laser called a femtosecond laser known for its incredible precision. You may experience slight pressure for a few seconds—but no pain. Some people describe it as someone gently pressing on their eye.

Once the flap is created, you will be moved underneath the next laser machine. At this stage, the flap is carefully lifted to expose the underlying layer of the cornea.

Step 4: Reshaping your cornea

Next the main laser, also known as an excimer laser, reshapes the inner layers of your cornea to correct your vision. You'll be asked to focus on a green light to help keep your eye still. Even if there is slight movement, the laser’s advanced eye-tracking technology follows your eye and makes adjustments. This part of the procedure only takes a few seconds, depending on your prescription.

Step 5: Putting the flap back in place

Once the laser is complete, the surgeon carefully places the flap back in its original position. It sticks naturally, without stitches, and starts healing immediately.

Step 6: Aftercare begins

You’ll rest for a little bit after your procedure. Then, you’ll go home the same day (someone else should drive you). We’ll give you detailed instructions and eye drops to help with healing.

What does LASIK feel like?

Most people say it’s easier than they expected. Pressure—not pain. Lights—not scary tools. And best of all? The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes per eye.

What happens next?

Your vision will start to clear quickly—often by the next day. You'll have a follow-up appointment the day after surgery to check how you're healing.
