How long after LASIK can you rub your eyes?
One of the most common questions we hear after LASIK is this:
"When can I rub my eyes again?"
If you’re used to rubbing your eyes when they’re tired, itchy, or dry, this habit can be hard to break. But after LASIK, resisting that urge is incredibly important—at least for a while.
Let’s talk about why eye rubbing is risky right after LASIK, how long you should avoid it, and what to do instead.
Why is rubbing your eyes a problem after LASIK?
During LASIK, a thin flap is created on the surface of your cornea (the clear front part of your eye). This flap is gently lifted so the laser can reshape the cornea underneath, correcting your vision.
At the end of the procedure, the flap is repositioned. It starts healing right away, but in those early days, it’s still fragile.
Rubbing your eyes can:
- Dislodge or shift the flap, especially in the first few days
- Slow down healing
- Increase the risk of infection
- Cause inflammation or discomfort.
Even if it feels harmless, rubbing too soon can undo the work the laser has done.
How long should you avoid rubbing your eyes?
Here’s a rough guide:
- First 7 days: Do not touch or rub your eyes at all. This is the most important window for healing.
- 1 to 4 weeks: Still avoid rubbing. Your eyes are healing under the surface. Gentle patting around your eyes is okay—but keep your hands clean.
- 1 month and beyond: Most people can safely rub their eyes again after 4–6 weeks. But ideally, it’s better to stop rubbing altogether—LASIK or not.
What if your eyes are itchy or dry?
Itchiness is very common after LASIK, especially during the first few days. But don’t rub.
Instead:
- Use the lubricating eye drops we give you. They soothe dryness and relieve itchiness
- Keep your eyes closed and rest when you can
- Apply a cool compress (clean, damp cloth) over your closed eyes
- Wear protective sunglasses when outdoors to prevent irritation from wind and sun.
What if you accidentally rub your eyes?
If it happens within the first few days, call us. It’s likely fine, but we’ll want to check just in case.
If it happens after a couple of weeks, don’t panic. Just monitor for any changes in vision, pain, or light sensitivity—and let us know if anything feels off.
What about rubbing your eyes while asleep?
This is a common concern, especially in the first week. That’s why we recommend wearing the protective shields or goggles we provide when you sleep. They stop you from rubbing your eyes without even knowing it.
After the first week, this becomes less of a concern, but some people keep using the shields for extra peace of mind.
Breaking the habit for good
Rubbing your eyes is common, but not great for your eyes in general. It can weaken the cornea over time and increase your risk of other issues—even if you’ve never had LASIK.
If you can, try to stop rubbing for good. Use drops when your eyes are dry, and wash your face with care. Your eyes will thank you.
