Do’s and don’ts after PRK surgery
PRK is a safe and effective procedure—but the way you care for your eyes afterward can make a big difference in your recovery and results.
So, let’s talk about the most important do’s and don’ts after PRK. These simple tips will help you heal faster, feel better, and get the best possible vision.
DO use your prescribed eye drops exactly as instructed
This is your number one job after surgery. Your drops prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and keep your eyes comfortable as they heal.
Set reminders if you need to. Missing doses can slow healing or cause discomfort.
DON’T rub your eyes
Your eyes may feel itchy, dry, or gritty—but rubbing can damage the healing surface and even lead to complications.
Use your drops, keep your hands away from your eyes, and use cool compresses for relief if needed.
DO wear your bandage lenses until your surgeon removes them
These soft contact lenses protect the surface of your eye while it heals. They also help reduce discomfort and speed up recovery.
Leave them in place until your eye care team says it’s safe to remove them.
DON’T swim or use hot tubs for at least 4 weeks
Water from pools, lakes, or spas can introduce bacteria into your healing eyes. It’s best to avoid them completely while your corneal surface recovers.
DO wear sunglasses outdoors
Your eyes will be more sensitive to light after PRK.
Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and help you feel more comfortable in bright environments.
Bonus: UV protection also supports long-term eye health and reduces your risk of haze or scarring.
DON’T drive until you’ve been cleared
Your vision will be blurry for a few days after PRK. Wait until your surgeon confirms it’s safe before getting back behind the wheel.
DO rest your eyes often
Take breaks from screens, reading, or anything that strains your eyes.
In the first few days, your eyes will feel best when they’re closed. So lean into rest and relaxation.
DON’T wear eye makeup until your surgeon gives you the all-clear
Mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow can introduce bacteria and irritate your healing eyes. Most people are advised to skip eye makeup for at least a week.
DO eat well and stay hydrated
Good nutrition supports healing. Drink water, eat leafy greens, and consider supplements rich in omega-3s (if approved by your doctor).
DON’T skip your follow-up appointments
Even if you feel fine, follow-ups are important. They help us monitor your healing, adjust your care if needed, and make sure your eyes are on track.
What happens if you don't follow these guidelines?
Skipping steps or ignoring advice can lead to:
- Slower healing
- Increased discomfort
- Higher risk of infection or complications
- Less predictable visual outcomes.
But when you follow the do’s and avoid the don’ts, you give your eyes the best chance for a smooth, successful recovery.
