Can you eat before LASIK surgery?

If you're getting ready for LASIK, you’ve likely done some research—or maybe you’re about to go down the rabbit hole. One of the most common and practical questions we hear is: “Can I eat before LASIK surgery?”

It’s a fair question. With many medical procedures, patients are asked to fast. But LASIK isn’t quite like other surgeries. Let’s break down what you need to know about eating before your laser vision correction procedure, so you can arrive confident and well-prepared.

So, can you eat before LASIK?

Yes, you can and should eat before LASIK surgery.

LASIK is not performed under general anesthesia, so there’s no risk of nausea or aspiration from a full stomach. In fact, we encourage you to have a light, healthy meal a few hours before your procedure.

This helps you:

  • Maintain stable blood sugar levels
  • Avoid feeling dizzy, weak, or faint
  • Stay relaxed and comfortable during the procedure

What should you eat before LASIK?

Think of it like fueling your body without going overboard. You don’t want to show up with an empty stomach—but you also don’t want to eat a heavy, greasy meal.

Good options include:

  • Toast with eggs
  • Oatmeal with fruit
  • A smoothie with protein
  • Grilled chicken with vegetables
  • Yogurt with granola

Avoid anything that’s overly rich, spicy, or hard to digest.

Should you avoid caffeine before LASIK?

This depends on how your body responds to caffeine. If it makes you feel jittery or anxious, it’s best to skip coffee or energy drinks before the procedure.

But if you regularly have a morning coffee and skipping it gives you a headache or makes you feel off—go ahead and have your usual cup.

What about water or other drinks?

Yes, you can drink water before LASIK, and it’s encouraged to stay hydrated. Just don’t drink so much that you feel the need to rush to the restroom mid-procedure!

Why eating matters for your LASIK experience

LASIK is a quick procedure—usually under 10 minutes per eye—but your visit at the clinic will take a bit longer. Between prep, the procedure, and your brief recovery period, you might be at the clinic for 1 to 2 hours.

Arriving well-fed helps you:

  • Stay calm and focused
  • Avoid unnecessary stress on your body
  • Feel your best during and after surgery

Is there anyone who should not eat before LASIK?

There are very few exceptions. If you have specific medical conditions or you’re taking medication that interacts with food, your doctor will guide you on what to do.

Otherwise, for most people, eating before LASIK is completely safe and recommended.

Final prep tips before your LASIK appointment

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid makeup, perfume, or lotions on your face
  • Bring someone to drive you home
  • Follow all instructions from your LASIK team
