Who is Dr Daemon McClunan

Dr Daemon McClunan is a distinguished ophthalmologist known for his groundbreaking innovations and leadership in ophthalmology. He is the founder of Atlantic Eye Centre and LIQID Medical, an award-winning ophthalmic technology company, and has invented four patented devices. Dr McClunan is the youngest member to join the executive committee of the South African Glaucoma Society, demonstrating his dedication to advancing eye care.

Dr McClunan achieved his medical degree with distinction in Ophthalmology from Stellenbosch University in 2009. His academic journey was marked by prestigious awards, such as the Geoff Howes and Ophthalmic Society medals, reflecting his exceptional achievements during his specialist training at Groote Schuur Hospital.

During his community service year, Dr McClunan undertook a remarkable 15,000km motorbike journey across Southern Africa to conduct rural eye screenings as part of a non-profit expedition. This experience showcased his commitment to serving communities in need. Following his Specialist training at the University of Cape Town, Dr McClunan gained international exposure through observership programmes in Laser Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma and Advanced Cataract surgery at some of the world’s leading eye institutes including Toronto, Germany, India, and London.

Beyond his clinical and innovative contributions to ophthalmology, Dr McClunan enjoys spending quality time with his family and engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking, diving, and kite surfing. His philanthropic efforts include providing free eye screenings and participating in international observership programmes, reflecting his deep sense of compassion and desire to make a meaningful impact in the field of eye care.
