Is LASIK Dangerous?
If you’re considering LASIK, you’ve probably come across horror stories online. “What if something goes wrong?” “Could I go blind?”, is LASIk dangerous?". These are understandable fears, but let’s look at the facts.
LASIK is one of the most studied and safest elective medical procedures in the world. Millions of people have had it, and the vast majority are thrilled with the results. But, like any medical procedure, LASIK does come with risks. Let’s break them down so you can make an informed decision.
How safe is LASIK?
LASIK has a more than 99% success rate when it comes to serious complications. Numerous global studies confirm that the procedure is very safe when performed on suitable candidates by experienced surgeons.
The key word here? Suitable. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. If you have certain eye conditions (like thin corneas or severe dry eyes), your doctor may recommend an alternative procedure.
What are the risks of LASIK?
While major complications are rare, some patients experience temporary side effects, such as:
- Dry eyes – This is the most common side effect, but it usually improves within a few weeks or months
- Night vision issues – Some people notice halos or glare around lights at night, particularly in the first few months
- Overcorrection or undercorrection – In rare cases, an enhancement procedure may be needed to fine-tune results
- Flap complications – Since LASIK involves creating a corneal flap, improper healing can occasionally lead to issues.
Serious complications, such as vision loss, are extremely rare when the procedure is done correctly. That’s why choosing a reputable clinic with experienced surgeons is crucial.
Can you go blind from LASIK?
The short answer? No. There is no recorded case of LASIK directly causing total blindness. The laser only reshapes the cornea—it does not touch the retina or any part of the eye responsible for complete vision loss.
Who should avoid LASIK?
While LASIK is safe, it’s not right for everyone. You may not be a good candidate if you:
- Have unstable vision (your prescription changes often)
- Have severe dry eye syndrome
- Have thin or irregular corneas
- Have an eye disease like keratoconus
- Are pregnant or nursing (hormonal changes can affect vision).
